More Than a Program: Chanel de Alonzo’s Vision for BIH Oceanside

Featured: Oceanside Director, Chanel de Alonzo

Meet the heart behind our Oceanside site! In our latest spotlight, our new Oceanside Director Chanel de Alonzo shares what drew her to BIH, how she’s cultivating a safe and welcoming space for local mamas, her favorite Oceanside hidden gems, and the anthem keeping her grounded this season.

  1. You recently stepped in to lead BIH Oceanside during such a foundational time. What drew your heart to this mission, and what part of your daily work truly fills your cup?

What drew me to BIH is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers and families during one of the most important stages of life. Pregnancy and early parenting can be both exciting and challenging, and I believe every family deserves support, encouragement, and access to resources. What fills my cup most is watching babies grow and thrive. I also find great joy in seeing mothers build confidence, strengthen their support networks, and realize they are not alone on their journey.

  1. Every leader brings a unique toolkit. Looking back at your career, what experiences or moments prepared you most to show up for our BIH moms?

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working alongside diverse communities and supporting individuals navigating complex life challenges. These experiences taught me the importance of listening without judgment, meeting people where they are, and building programs that are responsive to their unique needs. They have prepared me to lead with empathy, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping families thrive.

  1. For a mom or mom-to-be in Oceanside who is wondering if BIH is right for her, what makes this community special, and what can she expect the moment she walks through our doors?

BIH is more than a program. It is a community of support. From the moment a mother walks through our doors, she can expect to be welcomed with respect, kindness, and understanding. Our goal is to create a safe and nurturing environment where mothers feel heard, supported, and empowered while gaining access to valuable resources, education, and meaningful connections with other families.

  1. When a mother finishes her time with our Oceanside sisters, what lasting feeling or strength do you hope she carries forward into her parenting journey?

I hope every mother leaves knowing that she is capable, resilient, and worthy of support. While parenting does not come with a perfect roadmap, I want our mothers to feel confident in their ability to make decisions for themselves and their families, advocate for their needs, and continue building strong support systems long after their time with us.

  1. We love a good playlist moment. What’s one song that instantly lifts your spirits or keeps you grounded, and why is it your go-to?

At the moment, Break My Soul” by Beyoncé is my go-to song. Whenever I need a boost or a reminder to stay focused, it’s the song I turn to. Its message of resilience, empowerment, and knowing your worth really resonates with me. It reminds me to stay grounded, trust myself, and keep moving forward with confidence, even when obstacles or negative voices try to distract me. I love how it encourages me to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to stay committed to my purpose. Plus, its energy is contagious and always seems to lift my spirits when I need it most.

  1. Connecting families to great local support is part of the magic here. What is one community resource or hidden gem in or around Oceanside you’re always excited to share with our moms?

One of the things I enjoy sharing with families is the wide variety of family-friendly resources available throughout Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista. From local libraries, parenting programs, community centers, and parks to our beautiful beaches, there are so many opportunities for learning, connection, and recreation. As a local hidden gem, I always recommend taking a stroll along South Coast Highway to enjoy the vibrant street art and unique character that make the community so special.

  1. Between sunny 70-degree days, cooler evenings, and full calendars, Fall in Southern California has its own vibe. What is topping your personal list of things you love doing or enjoying this time of year outside of work?

For me, fall is a season that serves as a reminder to slow down, reflect, and appreciate the small moments that bring balance and joy. In Southern California, it is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. I love taking walks along the coast, spending time with family and friends, exploring local community events and farmers markets, and ending the day by a bonfire on a cool evening with a warm cup of spiced apple cider.
