NHA’s Senior Center celebrated Juneteenth on June 19, 2012. The annual lunch included: great food, dancing, raffles, fun and special guest speaker Dr. Willie Blair; Representative from the office of Congressmen Bob Filner. Blair spoke of the history behind Juneteenth, as well as its signigicance.
This special celebration is always popular among seniors and staff, offering a chance to celebrate the historical event. The NHA Senior Center has held a Juneteenth celebration for over 28 years.
What is Juneteenth?
Juneteenth (June 19th) commemorates the enforcement of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation that freed emaining slaves in Texas on June 19, 1865. Many ignored the Emancipation Proclamation executive order in 1863…until Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that war had ended and the enslaved were free.
