Executive Vice President and General Counsel
Dwight Smith is Executive Vice President and General Counsel of The Neighborhood House Association (NHA), which is San Diego County’s largest multi-purpose human services agency. NHA has a 96 year heritage and currently serves more than 22,000 families each year through an array of services designed to meet the cultural, social, health and emergency daily living needs of local residents. Mr. Smith joined NHA in 2006 and is responsible for the organization’s overall legal affairs, provides business support and advice to the Board and senior management and manages the contract administration, corporate governance and human resources functions. Mr. Smith has negotiated numerous contract and license matters with County, State and federal regulatory agencies.
Prior to joining NHA, Dwight was Associate General Counsel of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation (SDCCC), from 2003-2006, where he assisted with strategic joint venture relationships including telecommunication, food and beverage and business services ventures such as Verizon, Starbucks and FedEx. The San Diego Convention Center Corporation is an award winning convention center created by the City of San Diego which serves as one of the region’s strongest economic engines by hosting international and national conventions and trade shows.
Previously, Dwight was Deputy General Counsel & Assistant Secretary of RSTAR Corporation (NASDAQ: RSTR), San Ramon, California, a provider, developer and manager of web-based education services, learning tools and satellite-based networks for Internet access. Dwight rendered advice on SEC compliance, strategic acquisitions and e-commerce issues.
Dwight was Senior Corporate Counsel of The PMI Group, Inc. (NYSE: PMI), San Francisco, California, which is a leading provider of private mortgage insurance, automated mortgage underwriting software and risk assessment products to key residential mortgage lending institutions. From 1995-2000, Dwight was responsible for negotiating general business contracts and software licenses with most of the top Fortune 50 financial institutions, merger and acquisition transactions, advising on federal/state PACs compliance and solicitation matters, and prepared SEC reports and compliance with Section 16.
Before relocating to California, Dwight was an Attorney, Corporate Law Division, of the American Medical Association, Chicago, Illinois, where he focused on nonprofit tax matters and corporate sponsorship programs. Dwight began his career as a tax associate with Arthur Andersen & Co., based in Chicago, IL.
Mr. Smith holds a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from DePaul University. Dwight is a member of the California Bar Association, Illinois Bar Association, National Bar Association and the Association of Corporate Counsel. Dwight has served as an advisor to charter schools in San Diego, California and is a member of the Audit Committee for the Alliance for HealthCare Foundation.
